Language

Spanish is the “de facto” official language of Chile. In some areas, several indigenous languages (with no official status and now close to extinction) are also spoken: Mapudungun (in Auracania Region), Quechua and Aymara (north region, close to the Bolivian border) and Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

The Spanish spoken in Chile, though still entirely intelligible as standard Spanish, has a distinctive pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and slang. Non-native speakers who are competent in Spanish may find the Chilean accent to be difficult (or even impossible) to understand. Here are some useful vocabulary words that will help you during your time in Chile.
